Abstract
This study presents data and analysis of the academic performance and proficiency in the major field of the senior A.B. Political Science students of the West Visayas State University for the academic year 2011-2012. Variables include students' academic performance and proficiency in Political Science, admission criteria: WVSU College Admission Test, Political Science aptitude test and interview, residence, type of high school institution and Socialized Tuition Fee Assistance Program bracket. The general weighted average of students represents the academic performance while the result in the terminal competencies assessment for specialized knowledge determines their proficiency in Political Science. The data gathered were subjected to descriptive and inferential statistical analyses using frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, t-Test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson correlation and regression analysis. Results show that, generally, the students have very satisfactory academic performance and are proficient in Political Science. Significant differences are noted in the students' academic performance when they are classified according to high school grade point average, WVSU CAT score and aptitude test score. Significant differences also exist in their proficiency in Political Science when they are classified according to their WVSU CAT score and aptitude test score. A highly significant correlation is seen between the students' academic performance and proficiency in Political Science. The only significant predictor of their academic performance is their high school grade point average. Their WVSU CAT Score, aptitude test score, Socialized Tuition Fee Assistance Program bracket, and residence are identified as significant predictors of their proficiency in Political Science.
