This study looked into the constructs that underlie the admission examinations of the West Visayas State University College of Education Graduate School that may very well identify the entrance skills and competencies of the Graduate School students. Further, this study hopes to give a clear picture of the capabilities of entering graduate students both masters and doctoral. Results of factor analyses show that both the Master’s and Doctoral admission examinations are valid in terms of the critical thinking skills that are being assessed. The entrance skills and competencies of the graduate students, both master’s and doctoral, are quite low. However, verbal and analytical abilities of doctoral and master’s students are significantly different with doctoral students having better competencies. It is therefore imperative that graduate school faculty members have to initiate reforms and re-direct their teaching towards development of critical thinking skills if we have to do our share to properly place the higher education and the country’s overall Human Resource Development (HRD) landscape. The graduate school faculty need to re-examine the academic structure and contents of the courses they are teaching so that graduate credits (“units”) or completed degrees of the students contextually fit in either the Knowledge, Skills, Attitude and Values (KSAV) requirements of the workplace, particularly the specific required competencies in government offices.

<title>Influence of beneficial microorganisms as probiotic drinks in the performance of brooding native chicken</title>

This study was conducted to find out the influence of beneficial microorganisms as probiotics drinks in the performance of brooding native chicken. The probiotic drinks were mixed in the daily water requirements of chicks during 21 days of the brooding period. The 100 day-old chicks were assigned in Randomized Complete Block Design with 5 treatments and 4 replications. The result of the study reveals no significant differences among treatments in terms of final live-weight, and survival rate of birds. Furthermore, the study also reveals that without antibiotics, the brooder chicks have a good chance of survival, which is statistically comparable with those birds given with antibiotics and / or with probiotics drinks. In other parameters like the gain in weight, feed consumption, and feed conversion ratio, the results reveal significant differences among treatments means during 21 days of brooding. Further analysis using Least Significant Differences test, reveals that birds given pure water only, antibiotic with vitamins, indigenous microorganism serum, and fermented pineapple juice, were comparable. The finding reveals that pure water was enough to influence favorably the growth performance of chicks with good survival rate during 21 days of brooding native chicken.

<title>Administrators’ managerial capability and effectiveness in state universities and colleges in Western Visayas</title>

This research determined the administrators’ managerial capability and effectiveness in the State Universities and Colleges (SUCs) in Western Visayas (WV). The study was conducted in 2015 among the 125 randomly selected SUCs administrators: deans, directors, vice presidents and presidents. The instruments utilized for the investigation were adapted from the 2010 MIMMPC Management Capability Index Survey Questionnaire for managerial capability and the Nova Central School District Effectiveness Questionnaire for managerial effectiveness which underwent pilot testing, reliability and factor analysis. Frequency count, mean and standard deviation were utilized as descriptive statistics. Results reveal that majority of the administrators in the SUCs in WV were extremely capable in terms of their managerial capability, in all nine aspects. They also appear to possess the ability to create a strong workplace culture, which facilitates employees to grow and engage in practicing leadership, collaborative decision-making, and nurturing creativity, and innovation as manifested in all the nine aspects of their managerial capability. A large majority of the administrators were highly effective in terms of their managerial effectiveness in all ten aspects. This shows that administrators possess the ability to attain their organizations’ goals by deliberately using resources in an efficient and effective manner.
