This study attempted to screen selected phytochemicals in the ethanolic, methanolic and acetone extracts of Nanochlorum spp. The extracts were subjected to the following tests: Test tube method for Alkaloid Analysis (Confirmatory test, test for quaternary bases and/or amine oxide), Test Tube Reaction Methods for Steroids (Keller-Kiliani test: test for 2-deoxysugars), the Bornträger’s Test for Anthraquinones, Test tube Screening Methods for Flavonoids (Test for leucoanthocyanins: Bate-Smith and Metcalf method), and the Test tube Screening Method for Tannins (Ferric chloride test). Results showed that in all Nanochlorum spp. extract, steroids, anthraquinones and tannins were positive (with slight precipitation) but negative with alkaloids and flavonoids.

<title>The profile, personal attributes and protective factors of resilient at-risk youth in a state university</title>

This descriptive study looked at the profile, the personal attributes and protective factors of resilient at-risk youth in the academe as well as identified other factors instrumental in making them resilient. Data were taken from 86 students of the West Visayas State University system. Results showed that the respondents were young (16-21 years old), female, in good health, and eldest or middle child. They had legitimate birth status, come from intact family structure with nuclear household composition, and the majority were extremely poor and orphans. As to their personal attributes, spiritual connectedness rank first, followed by cognitive competence, autonomy, and social competence. On the contrary, their protective factors come primarily from the school, then the home and community providing almost equal protection and support. Further, another significant factor that makes the participants resilient is the presence of care and support from a significant adult, caregiver or teacher, or .having at least one strong personal relationship with a role model.

To upgrade preschool teachers’ knowledge and skills essential to organizing, managing, and/or teaching, a government-sponsored training for 90 teachers coming from Region 6, 7, and 8 in April to May 2011 was conducted. Findings revealed a significant increase in the participants’ knowledge in the teaching of early childhood education. Holistic concepts were learned and professional and personal skills were developed by the participants who viewed the training as excellent. Misconceptions were also addressed. Indeed, the training enhances the capability of the teacher participants and this made them more confident in handling preschool children.

Eco-justice is now becoming a sine qua non in almost all aspects of human and social life. Eco-justice-oriented education needs to be disseminated to the community. Students can be eco-justice-oriented citizens if their teachers are knowledgeable and are advocating eco-justice themselves. It is for this reason that this study was conducted among public school teachers to determine the differences between knowledge and practices on eco-justice among educators. Questionnaires were administered, and interviews and observations were conducted. Quantitative data were analyzed using SPSS. The results indicated a "high" level of knowledge and a "positive" level of attitude toward eco-justice. There was no significant differences recorded across sex, educational qualifications, but a significant difference was found in the level taught subgroups as regard to knowledge about eco-justice. No significant differences were also observed in sex, educational qualifications, and level taught subgroups as regard to attitudes toward eco-justice. There is a significant relationship between knowledge about and attitudes towards eco-justice.
