Awareness of smoking effects among elementary and high school students in Iloilo City

Abstract

The survey research presents the level of awareness of smoking effects among elementary and high school students in Iloilo City using a 30-item Likert-type questionnaire. The 1,091 respondents were taken from the total students of the largely populated and less populated elementary and high schools in the seven districts of Iloilo City. Results show that the students have average level of awareness of smoking effects when taken as an entire group. This may mean that the students are knowledgeable of the harmful effects of smoking to their health. When students were classified according to sex and school level, both groups have average level of awareness of smoking effects; however, females are significantly more aware than males and high school students are significantly more aware of the smoking effects than elementary grade students.
