Abstract
This qualitative research aimed to investigate the life experiences and coping mechanisms of underprivileged achievers in science. This research presents five (5) cases through narrative inquiry methodological perspective. The five (5) respondents (high school students and college students) were selected through purposive sampling. The respondents were selected on the following bases: (1) they were enrolled in or graduated from a school in a remote school or category C high schools of the Division of Iloilo for the school year 2010-2014; (2) belonged to low economic status (poorest); (3) teacher's choice; (4) High academic achievement In Science subjects, and; (5) willingness to participate in the research. Sources of data were the interviews of other participants, like the students' parents, peers, teachers, and employers (If the respondent was currently employed) or Is a working student Data analyses were taken from In-depth interviews, written narratives, and observation of the respondents. Result of the study revealed that underprivileged achievers in science are students who have the following characteristics: motivated, love of knowledge, achievers in their chosen field (science) and have a passion for sharing the knowledge acquired. For the social dimension, the participants had people that boost their potential; the achievers in science know how to resist negative pressures. For the family dimensions, their families support and value their education despite the hardships In life. In school, they experience the lack of resources that a student needs; they were also barely exposed to different science activities; their status in life limits their potential and affects their studies; some people limit their potentials; they are blessed with good teachers; poverty or financial aspect is the factor that contributes the most In their experiences; and if the respondents believed that, if given a break/opportunity, they will likely learn if they are well provided with everything they need in school and at home. Among their experiences, poverty contributes the most In time of difficulties underprivileged achievers' in science coping mechanisms indudes: seizing opportunities to support studies and learn despite being underprivileged; being optimistic and looking at things in a different view; by accepting the reality of the situation; by being determined and persistent; maximizing the use of available resources; by being practical and organized; by making use of available support systems; by being resourceful and having initiatives; and seeking God for refuge. Despite being underprivileged a student becomes an achiever in science because he/she is resilient in the subject science. They are strongly influenced by personal factors, their life experiences, and how they cope with such challenges in their student life.
